Hip Resurfacing Surgery
The keys to a successful hip resurfacing surgery involve proper diagnosis and technology selection, skilled surgeons, and a well implemented rehabilitation process. New technology has been developed to reduce wear and extend the lifespan of these solutions. While these advanced technologies may not be available in the US, they are available to international patients. Top surgeons, advanced technology, and a comprehensive rehabilitation program, are combined to achieve superior long lasting results.
Our commitment to quality, combined with the latest technology improvements and expertise, provides superior results in a very safe world class patient destination.
The ReCap® Femoral Resurfacing Head
A less invasive alternative surgical option to total hip replacement is hip resurfacing.
The ReCap® Femoral Resurfacing System replaces the surface of the femoral head and is designed to restore the normal anatomy and biomechanical function of the hip joint.
The major advantage of the ReCap® Femoral Resurfacing System is its conservative nature. By avoiding medullary canal intrusion, it preserves valuable femoral bone stock, making it a bone-preserving alternative to total hip replacement.
A 2006 study published by Girard, J. et al. in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (British) concluded that a group of young patients with femoral hemi-resurfacing were able to maintain a higher average activity level versus a similar group of patients who received a total hip replacement. Results suggest that improved resurfacing results may be attributed to the following:
•Reduced pain and quicker recovery time from the resurfacing surgery
•Precision fitting of the resurfacing component to the size of the hip socket
•Traditional design with a cylindrical stem that extends beyond the shell
•Precise congruity between the implant and the hip socket cartilage
•As-cast, high carbon/high carbide, CoCr substrate for wear resistance
•Highly polished bearing surface helps minimize wear of hip socket
•Large range of sizes to help produce a precise anatomical fit
•Press-fit and cemented resurfacing heads available in sizes 38mm-60mm
•Accurate and reproducible ReCap® instrumentation to simplify the surgical technique and reduce operating time
Metal-on-metal articulations date back to the 1950s and offer a significant wear reduction compared with metal or ceramic-on-polyethylene while offering potentially higher stability and range of motion. The M2a-Magnum™ is an ultra-high performance metal-on-metal articulation offering superior joint mechanic restoration and full compatibility with Biomet's clinically proven hip stems. Unlike ceramic-on-ceramic or traditional metal-on-polyethylene bearings, the M2a-Magnum™ Hip System offers the stability and ROM of a big ball (=38mm) in acetabulums as small as 44mm.
The ReCap® Femoral Resurfacing Head is one option available at Stenum Hospital.
The experienced orthopedic surgeons at Stenum can determine if you are a candidate for this implant or if another type of implant would better suit your unique situation.
